The Weekly Loan Report: Kerbey wins Man of the Match after impressive performance for Hendon
Keeping U’s fans up to date with our loan players in action over the weekend
Matt Kerbey won the Chairman’s Man of the Match Award following a stellar goalkeeping display in Hendon’s Southern Premier South fixture against AFC Totton on Saturday.
Despite not having too much to do, the young goalkeeper made two crucial saves to deny a strong Totton side from taking all 3 points. The 21-year-old pulled off a couple of great saves at important moments in the match, with one coming just before half-time to keep the score level going into the break. The Chairman, Cyrus Cooper, also credited Kerbey’s confident performance, remarking upon his ability to command his area and come for crosses, which took the pressure off the defence. He played the full 90 minutes and contributed to a well-deserved point for Hendon, with the game finishing 1-1 between the two sides.
It was also a good weekend for fellow academy graduate Oliver Khinda, who played 45 minutes in Chertsey’s victory against Hanworth Villa FC in the 1st qualifying round of the FA Trophy. It was Khinda’s fourth appearance in blue and white, following his second consecutive start last week in the FA Cup defeat to Hayes and Yeading United. Despite beginning the match on the bench, the 18-year-old was substituted on at half-time by manager Mark Harper for Toby Little, with the Curfews 1-0 up. Last-minute drama saw Hanworth take the game to penalties following a late goal in the 92nd minute. However, Chertsey managed to get the job done, winning 4-2 on penalties to progress to the next round.
Since joining Burgess Hill on loan mid-way through August, U’s central defender Jack Taylor has put in a series of sensational performances at the back for the Hillians and impressed Manager Dean Cox, who has rewarded the young man by starting him every game since he arrived at the club. On Saturday, the 18-year-old made his sixth appearance in green and black against Hythe Town in the FA Trophy. Even though Burgess Hill lost 3-1, Taylor can hold his head high with another fine individual display, the highlight being an incredible last-man tackle to prevent Hythe from breaking through and opening the scoring. It received rapturous applause from the home supporters.
Finally, Tobi Ogundega made his first start for Bognor at the weekend in a well-earned 2-2 draw against Enfield in the Isthmian League, Ogundega was substituted after 67 minutes by manager Robbie Blake with the score at 2-2. The defender provided Bognor fans with a spirited performance at the back for the Rocks away from home at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
